What this is
Held in Hulme, Manchester, this intensive five day in-person course will develop your skills as both a writer of narrative for voice, and your ability to record, edit and mix stories for any creative project which includes spoken word. With the guidance of a professional TV screenwriter and tutor in sound, you will be introduced to the essential elements of character and structure, and ‘workshop’ scripts together to create a compelling short narrative. You will be shown how to effectively edit audio, with an emphasis on developing your critical listening skills, and exploring the myriad of possibilities that creative editing can bring to the narrative world you construct. Combining both these strands of learning will result in the recording, editing and mixing of your audio piece, which you’ll go on to present as a ‘work in progress’ at a listening session on the final day. The in-person sessions are followed up by an online tutorial to help with finishing your piece and help you think of ways to develop your practice. On completion of this course you will have a solid grounding in both narrative and creative sound editing and production, which you can then develop further in a variety of contexts, such as radio, podcasts, theatre, or video production.
